Soc Team,
For those of you who are preparing for final exams, here is your study guide. Frankly it is just the list of terms you already have and know.
More importantly, the format will be up to you. Either you can take it as an oral exam starting next week (schedule the time with me; plan on 10-15 minutes) or you can take a written exam on the day of the final. I recommend the oral.

Weekend Reminder
Soc Team,
First off, I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation yesterday and today. Thanks for handling the topic of race so well.
For this weekend you are to respond to Soc Forum 06 on Focus. To answer the prompt you need to read this article (also posted on Classroom). Really wrestle with this one.

Thanksgiving Observations!
Soc Team,
I hope and pray you have enjoyed and you will continue to enjoy your Thanksgiving vacation!
And hopefully you have had your eyes open during this week off.
Helen Keller once said, "I have walked with people whose eyes are full of light but who see nothing in wood, sea, or sky, nothing in city streets, nothing in books. What a witless masquerade is this seeing! It were better far to sail forever in the night of blindness, with sense and feeling and mind, than to be thus content with the mere act of seeing."
May we not be content with the mere act of seeing! To this end, finish your three observations for Monday. Be sure at least one of them is directly related to thanksgiving - either the holiday or the act of thanksgiving.

Weekend Reminder
Soc Team,
This weekend you are to continue to seeing - truly observing the world around you. In particular, notice the culture that surrounds you and shapes you. Don't just observe but also evaluate. What do you think about the elements of culture that are exerting social control over you?
This weekend you have the opportunity to respond to Soc Forum 05. Be sure to respond to the prompt and two peers.

Today's Plan
Soc Team,
Unfortunately I am not going to be able to join you today in class.
So here is the game plan:
- In order to better understand cultural relativism, ethnocentrism, and Christocentrism, I thought some practice would be beneficial. Read the article on the Danish woman and run it through this tripartite grid. Then find your own article and try the same process. All details are on Classroom.
- My encouragement is for you to do this initially on your own but then to get together with your peers to hash through your responses. Challenge one another's ideas until you all know why you landed where you landed - and so that you can articulate it well. You want to be sure you are understanding these concepts thoroughly.
- This assignment is due tomorrow (though you should finish in class today).
- If and when you finish, return to Classroom and open and complete the Culture Unit Terms. Be particularly careful to thoughtfully respond to the final four questions. This will be due on block day.
- Tomorrow in class we will field questions and review for a quiz on block day.
If you have any questions, shoot me an email.
God bless you today!

Weekend Reminder
Soc Team,
We have had some really good discussions wrestling with cultural relativism and ethnocentrism. This weekend, you are to reflect on our conversations and your thoughts through the "Cultural Relativism, Ethnocentrism, or Tertium Quid" assignment on Classroom.
The "Observing Culture Project" was extended through this weekend if you needed more time to complete it.
Our typical Observations for this weekend have been extended to Wednesday to accommodate these other assignments.
There is a very good change that we will bring this unit on culture to an end at the conclusion of this week. Plan on a quiz for block day.
And don't just look, see. Truly see what is going on around you. Then may God give you wisdom as to how to live.

Sociological Investigation Assessment
Soc Team,
To conclude this unit on Sociological Investigation, I am giving you three options for your assessment.
1) You may, with a partner, take a traditional paper quiz
- If you choose to take the paper quiz, you will have the first thirty minutes or so to corporately gather and study with the other students who are taking the paper quiz.
- After this time has expired, you are to situate yourselves with your assigned partner to take the quiz.
- As usual, you may discuss your answer with your partner and come up with a common answer for the questions. You may not use notes. You may derive and submit divergent answers to any given question.
2) You may, with a partner, conduct an in class observation of another class
- With a partner, select a class you would like to visit and contact the teacher of that course.
- Upon gaining permission, visit the class for sixty minutes.
- Decide in advance what research orientation you will be employing and how you will go about your observation.
- In addition, decide in advance or shortly after arriving what data/variables you will pursue.
- Record where you visited, what you observed, and specific data around the chosen variables (e.g. amount of the class that was participatory, number of students who touch their face and how many times they do so, enthusiasm of students, etc.).
- Return to the Soc classroom after your observation and draw at least two conclusions from your data. Note the reliability and validity of your conclusions.
- Note at least one correlation. State why it is either a correct correlation, spurious, or unclear without further study.
- This option is due by midnight on the day the observation is conducted.
3) You may, with a partner, conduct an out of class observation (on your own time)
- This option is much like the one above but conducted outside of class time and not at school.
- Follow all of the above requirements but be sure your provide even more explicit and careful discussion of what you observed - both generally and specifically.
- This option is due on Wednesday of next week (Oct 29)
When you have finished your responsibilities for the above, you have three options for how you can use the remainder of the period (this is primarily for those who choose option one and three):
- Gather together with others and discuss your Sociological Investigation Project (experiences, observations, creative spurious correlations, choice for changing California culture, etc.)
- Work on the terms for the upcoming unit (found on Classroom)
- Work on your observations for Monday (found on Classroom)
- Study quietly

Weekend Reminder
Soc Team,
I hope you enjoyed our social change action this week! Let's continue to love our neighbor as ourself!
This weekend:
- You have your Soc Forum on Focus. Be sure to respond to the prompt and then respond to two of your peers.
- The survey for our Sociological Investigation Project is up and ready to go. You can either read this to people orally or print it out to administer it. I decided to limit who could post to the survey online to only you and your classmates. This way I can see who has posted and who has not. And it ensures that we are in control of all of our data.
- Remember each of us are responsible for administering the survey to ten people (eight of which are strangers). Hint: Open with the fact that you are a student doing work for school. This usually encourages people to participate.
- The survey needs to be submitted online by Tuesday, October 21st by 8am.
- The survey needs to be submitted online by Tuesday, October 21st by 8am.
- The project is due Wednesday, October 22nd. You will have Monday and Tuesday in class to work on this.

Loving Our Neighbors
Soc Team,
Here is the game plan for us to love our neighbors tangibly and well here at MVC:
Mondays: No Gossip or Trash Monday!
Not only don't participate in gossip but actively don't tolerate it amongst your peers. And pick up trash on campus. Not only your trash but the trash of others. [This is not required but encouraged.]
Tuesday: Sincere Questions Tuesday!
During lunch and/or after school ask follow-up questions and don't tolerate "Fine" and "Good" as answers. Ask follow-up questions such as, "Are you really fine?" or "How are you good?"
Wednesday: Complement a Stranger (Encouragement Cards) Wednesday!
Go out of your way to get to know someone better than the surface and provide a sincere and specific compliment. And do this for someone you don't know well. You can also do this in the form of a card or email so they can remember what you said (this can also be done anonymously).
Thursday: Sit with a Stranger Thursday!
Thursdays have all high school students together. This is a day to actively serve those who are alone. Let's go to them and love them, ask them questions and serve them.
Friday: Live It Well Friday!
Love your neighbor well today!

Weekend Reminder
Soc Team,
We worked on spinning stats to finish out this week. Be sure you upload your work to Classroom along with the name of your partner(s).
We are on an observations weekend. Post three insightful observations of seeing the strange in the familiar by Monday.
On Monday we will roll out the plan for how we will work to serve MVC and change the culture for the better. I am excited!

Weekend Reminder
Team Soc,
With my foggy, sleep-deprived brain I failed to set up a forum for the weekend. Consequently you do not have a forum to which you need to respond.
And maybe it is a good thing because I do want you to be focused on your quiz for Monday. Study the elements of the study guide and be ready to work with a partner to demonstrate your knowledge and thought.
At the beginning of class before the quiz, I will be happy to field questions you might have.

Updated Plan
Soc Team,
It was so good to see you again! Thanks for all of your congratulations and prayers for my family!
After talking today, it seems clear we need tomorrow (Friday) to continue reviewing and honing our skills in preparation for our quiz. Therefore, the quiz will be moved back to Monday. And tomorrow we will tackle the material in earnest so you will be prepared.

Mittwoch! (Wednesday)
Because of complications with both my wife and daughter, I am sorry that I will not be able to make it into the classroom tomorrow. The plan is to return Thursday.
I looked through the work you have done thus far, and it has been wildly inconsistent. Some have done great work and are done with "The Sociological Perspective Unit Study Guide" and others appear to have done nothing whatsoever. Obviously this latter category is concerning.
[I realize this is Homecoming week and that I am not present, however, I do expect you use your time wisely. You can do this! Work done in class will serve you well later in the week.]
You will be given today (Mittwoch) in class to complete what you have yet to finish in class on Monday and Tuesday. If you have finished, please help others understand what they are missing.
Wednesday night I will give you a grade based on completion.
Thursday we will field questions.
Friday and Monday will be a two-part quiz. You will be able to work with a partner on this quiz. Your partner will be assigned to you.
If you have questions, please send me an email.

Homecoming Week
This week is Homecoming!
It is also the homecoming of my new daughter Nora Ingrid Davis!
I will not be in the classroom for the next two days as I stay home to serve and be with my family.
While I am gone, I want you to review all we have done thus far and be in a place where you could not only recount the material but speak thoughtfully about it. You should be able to make connections and see the relationship between different elements we have studied.
On Google Classroom you will find an assignment/document ("The Sociological Perspective Unit Study Guide") of which you should know all of its elements. Fill out this document collaboratively (you will all have your own doc but you can work together to come up with the answers) with groups of two to three. If you delegate, be sure you know and understand the terms you did not personally work to define/identify.
The hardest portion of this study guide will be the application of the paradigms. Basically, you should be able to run any element in society through the lens of the three sociological paradigms (e.g. automobiles and education). For any topic be able to articulate what a structural-functionalist, social-conflict theorist, and a symbolic-interactionist would see in that topic. If you understand how to do this, come up with random topics and try it. Also, serve your neighbors by helping them run different elements through the paradigms.
When I return Wednesday, I expect that you will have filled out the review sheet. Together, we will tackle any elements that are unclear. On Friday and Monday of next week, we should be able to take a two-part quiz.
If you have questions, please contact me.

Joy!
Soc Team (3rd period especially),
This morning my wife and I had a baby girl - Nora! Praise God that Nora and my bride are healthy! (Obviously this means I am not coming to class.)
Here is what I need you to do:
- Pray for rest and continued health.
- Have any final dialogue about what we should do as Soc classes to change the culture at MVC positively.
- When you have said what you desire to say, go to Google Classroom and fill out the form "Soc - Loving One Another Decision". Choose your top three preferences.
- Next, explore the three sociological paradigms - structural-functional, social-conflict, and symbolic-interationist (here, here, and here)
- Know the basics of each of these paradigms; take notes.
- Know their weaknesses (think about the contrast between other paradigms) of each; take notes on this as well.
- Do research into who are the most influential sociologists in each paradigm; again take notes
- Next week we will have a quiz over this material.
- This weekend is an observation weekend. I created a doc for each of you in GClassroom that you can write your observations in. Be sure to write three substantial and thoughtful observations by Monday.
Blessings!

Soc Team,
I hope you are enjoying your weekend. We have a weekend! God is good!
This is a forum weekend so be sure to Soc Forum III. In order to thoughtfully respond to the prompt, review the ideas on "The Global Village Applied to MV" doc. You are not limited to the ideas expressed therein, but be thinking about them to spur your imagination.

Response to Relativism and Grasp of Plausibility Structures
Team Soc,
This block day, I want you to be able to articulate a basic and reasoned response to:
- a relativist argument. You should be able to show the weaknesses of the relativists arguments.
- a positivist plausibility structure. You should be able to articulate the positivist's plausibility structure and its fundamental weaknesses. [A plausibility structure is the structure of practices and beliefs which in any society determines whether a belief is plausible or not.]
As mentioned in class, preferably, this quiz will be oral.
If you have questions, seek me out.
I am excited for you to be able to understand and respond to this.

Social Movement: We Bring the Change
Soc Team,
We have been wrestling with the implications of “The Global Village” and have recognized that we are profoundly privileged. We have a great deal in part because of our labor, but all of it is ultimately because of God’s grace on our lives and on our families. We were born here and now. This fact alone sets us apart.
Though we might not be the “one” who has the wealth of bottom 200 (20% of the population), we are decidedly at the top. We cannot compel the action of the one but we can control our own behavior. Individual action often has a limited scope and we do not need to go to the state to compel change; we can initiate the change ourselves - in ourselves - and hope to sweep others along with us.
Instead of trying to change the world at this point, let’s start local and close to where we are. Let’s try to change something at Monte Vista Christian. Let's love our neighbors as ourselves. And again, let’s not try to change the rules or go at this alone; let’s act together in influence others around us to bring change to make MVC better.
I asked you to brainstorm around this. The doors are wide open as to what we can do. Let’s be creative and potent in our social action.

The sociological perspective sees general patterns in the lives of particular people and sees the strange in the familiar.

Our First Quiz
Soc team,
I am excited for our first quiz. Excited.
This excites me because this will open the doors for you to articulate what you been learning. Once you have a good grasp of the terms "sociology" and the "sociological perspective", and understand the historical origins of sociology, you will be push your learning further through analysis and synthesis.
As questions as they arise.

Observations, Part II
Soc Team,
For this extended weekend, be sure to utilize the sociological perspective to truly see what is going on around you. Make at least three thoughtful, insightful observations. Be sure to express why something is strange or a pattern within society or between societies.
If you are going on the senior trip, observe while you are playing. What do you see? Include at least one observation from the trip.
These observations are to be uploaded via Google Classroom.

Soc History Project
Soc Team,
As we are coming to the end of this project, please be sure you pay close attention to the project details and rubric.
Three things must be submitted:
- research notes
- bibliography
- any elements of your presentation that are not live
I look forward to reading/seeing your thinking - and insight!

Insightful Observation
Karisa Brown, one of our own, made this insightful observation the other day:
"It's weird how cheerleaders can trust someone with their lives (by throwing one another in the air), yet, they can't even trust their best friends with a secret."
Well done Miss Brown!

Soc Team,
This has been a good week of seeking to see - to truly see. You have impressed me with your observations.
For this weekend (and for every other weekend from here on out), you will need to respond to the prompt on the "Soc Forum" on Focus.
Carefully and thoughtfully respond to the prompt. Wait sixty seconds. Then respond to two of your peers. Your response, like your original post, needs to be substantive and thoughtful.

Observations!
Team Soc,
This weekend will be our first venture into practicing what we will learn is the "Sociological Perspective": seeing the general in the particular and the strange in the familiar.
As you go about this weekend, truly see what is before you - especially in how we as humans act. We want to learn to go through life not merely as passive recipients, but as active members who are cognizant of what is going on around us. Therefore observe and do not only see.
Create a Doc called "Observations" and place it in the folder you shared with me (last, first #). In this Doc write the date and record your three observations of the strange in the familiar. Be sure your observations are thoughtful and you express them thoroughly.
And I look forward to reading your insight!

Google Folders
You have now received from me a folder called "Sociology". Be sure to move this folder to your "My Drive". When I place files into this folder, you will have access to them.
As I explained in class, you need to create a folder shared with me with called "Last, First #". Please share this folder with me (joshdavis@mvcs.org) with editing privileges.
If you want to create another folder in which you place these two folders, you can thereby keep your Soc files all in one.

How do I access the forms?
Team Soc,
It was brought to my attention that many of you were having difficulty accessing the Syllabus and Introductions Forms found here on the blog. Thanks for pointing this out!
This is the solution:
- You must be signed into your gmail/school email account to access the forms. So whether you are on a computer or your iPad you need to be signed into you gmail account. If you are on your iPad, open the Safari browser and sign into gmail (I know this is redundant if you have it on your email app and I am sorry about this redundancy) and then open another tab with this blog. When you click on the links they will then work.
Hopefully this will solve the problem. If you still have issues, let me know. Or if you know of a simpler way, let me know.

Final Weekend Reminder!
Team Soc,
Remember to thoughtfully respond to the final social stratification reflection questions. This is the last grade for the quarter.
This weekend is also a good time to prep for your final exam. However, if you do not have time to prep for the exam, we will have time in class at the beginning of the week to field questions before the exam.

Last Assignment of the Year!
Team Soc,
For Monday, these are the questions you need to answer individually and submit via Drive:
For Monday, these are the questions you need to answer individually and submit via Drive:
- Is Modernization or Dependency Theory more accurate? Why?
- Should we desire total societal equality?
- Read about Marx’s perspective and Vonnegut’s perspective through his short story "Harrison Bergeron". Do either of these pictures impact your perspective?
- If all societies have stratification, should we think about inequality as morally wrong (like whom?)? How should we think of social stratification from a Christian perspective?
- How much of your family’s social position is based on merit and how much on caste (do your best to estimate)? Why do you think this is the case? What do you attribute to merit? What do you attribute to caste?
- What do you think about your ability to climb the socio-economic ladder (considering birth and merit)?

Sexuality and Society Review
Team Soc,
Unfortunately I will be missing the first thirty minutes or so of class today.
As we are drawing this unit to a close, I would like you to be familiar with the terms and ideas posted on Drive (Sexuality and Society Terms/Ideas to Know). Please utilize this time wisely to define and demonstrate an understanding of the important ideas from this unit.
Once I return, we will have time to talk through these terms and ideas, and respond to questions.

Reflection on SSM Debate
Team Soc,
Yesterday's debate was engaging and challenging. I hope you enjoyed it. And more importantly, I hope you think more about the arguments put forward by both sides.
On Monday we will allow for a little more time to debate and provide closing statements. And then I will chime in with some of my thoughts about the debate and the topic.
Tuesday we will start personally reflecting on the topic in order to submit a final thoughtful response to the larger topic.
May God give us wisdom!

I hope you are enjoying your Easter vacation! The weather is warm and it is prime time to get outside and recharge before our final push to the end of the year.

A couple things to note:
- Your grades are posted. For any seniors with senioritis all is not well in gradeland. Turn your work in!
- You will be given Tuesday (the day we return to school) in class to finish your fact sheet and argument. The argument must be robust and be able to withstand a withering critique by the team that provides your rebuttal.
- Keep your eyes open this break. There is much to see. You will have three observations due on the Wednesday we return (April 23).

Weekend Reminder
Team Soc,
I do not know if you can hear the "Same Love" hook going through your head, but I know I can. And when I hear it, it makes me think. I hope the same for you.
This week we will be diving deeper into the same sex attraction and same sex marriage discussion. As we share our survey with others, it will be good to get their voice involved in the discussion.

Weekend Reminder
Team Soc,
As most of you were down south the past few days, I hope you found it to be enjoyable!
Hopefully you had your eyes wide open while you were gone (those who did not travel - I hope this is true of you as well).
Sometime this weekend, if you have not done so already, record three things you observed as of late. I would like at least one of your observations to revolve around sexuality.
Come Monday we will jump deep into our unit on Sexuality and Society.

Sexuality and Society
Team Soc,
I am really looking forward to this unit on Sexuality and Society. There is so much to tackle here and I am curious to know what you find to be more compelling. Therefore, I would like you to fill out the following form to let me know what you want to cover: Sexuality and Society Questions to Address.
You do not need to provide your name for all the questions you submit. However, I do want everyone to respond, so please provide your name for at least one question.

Weekend Reminder
Team Soc,
Conform. Everyone is. Everyone is getting their assignments in. Even the missing ones. Be sure you have turned in everything so I can close out the gradebook this upcoming week.
Also, be sure to submit your thoughtful "Conformity Reflections".
Monday we are going to review this unit on groups and Tuesday we will have a quiz/test.
I am excited for our larger, more extensive review we will start on Wednesday...
Have a good weekend. And ask yourself if you are using your time Christianly (per our conversation in class today).

A Learning Opportunity
Team Soc,
Those of you who were around this past week, I really
enjoyed talking with you! Our conversation was engaging and interesting. Those
of you who were not here… well, sorry you missed out but pray your week was
good and a blessing.
Unfortunately I will not be in class Monday-Wednesday this
week; I am away at a conference.
However, you will have the opportunity to
learn from and engage with a remarkable man – Roger Henderson. As a man who
loves God and was a philosophy professor, Mr. Henderson is going to walk you
through some bold ideas. Instead of telling you about them here, I will let him
explain.
Enjoy.

Weekend Reminder
Team Soc,
I am so excited for this project you are working on! It will be great!
And I have decided to extend the deadline to Monday, February 10th.
Consequently I am sure you are going to turn in the best work possible. You have two weekends and all of next week to tackle this.
If you are in first period, please list your group members on THIS DOC (you will need to be signed into your gmail to access it). I want to be sure we get everyone plugged into a group. If you are not in a group, you need to proactively seek one out and/or seek me out.

The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness
Team Soc,
Today you will pick up directly where we left off in class yesterday. Pull up The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness and continue to read aloud as a class. My recommendation is to stop after each numbered section is complete and talk through the main points with your partner and create a summary of what you heard. Reconvene as a class ten minutes later and read the next section and repeat the process.
Once you have finished the last section, talk through it with your partner, create a summary and read and discuss the "Reflection Questions". Then respond to each of the reflection questions independently.
Your summary and your response to the Reflection Questions should be posted to Drive or left with the sub when you are done.
When you finish this, you are to to use your time to research and plan for the Social Norms Project.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop me an email.

Welcome Back!
It is so good to be back.
Yes, Christmas vacation was lovely, but it is good to be back with you as we talk about life.
So, welcome back!
As I will mention in class, be sure to create a new document for observations for the second semester. And record your Christmas vacation observations (at least three) by Wednesday, January 8th, before class.
